Recién se acaba de anunciar que lo que queda del muro de Berlín (Unos 1300 metros de longitud aproximadamente), y que se convirtió en una galería de arte al aire libre, será restaurado para evitar su destrucción, el costo estimado es de de 2.2 millones de euros y esta programado que los trabajos finalizen el día 9 de noviembre de 2009, justo para conmemorar el aniversario número veinte de su caída. Actualmente es una atracción turística, ya que existen pinturas realizadas por 118 artistas de 22 países distintos, pero hasta hace poco menos de 20 años fue no sólo símbolo de vergüenza para la humanidad, sino también de tristeza y rencor para los alemanes al mantenerlos separados de sus familias, a pesar de estar a sólo unos pasos de distancia entre sí.

Con el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y tras haber vencido el eje aliado los países que lo formaban (Rusia, Inglaterra y Estados Unidos) junto con Francia quisieron asegurarse de que la Alemania facista no restableciera su poder. Para éste fin decidieron controlar y ocupar militarmente el territorio aleman; sin embargo, la diferencia de ideas políticas y sistemas sociales encontrados entre la entonces Unión Soviética y los tres países capitalistas no permitió que convivieran en el mismo lugar, asi que decidieron dividir sólo «de forma simbólica» el territorio aleman. Posteriormente no bastó esa línea imaginaria.

Fue la noche del 12 al 13 de agosto de 1961 cuando ante el asombro del mundo y sobre todo de los propios alemanes y en particular de los habitantes de Berlín que se levantó una cerca de alambre de 3 metros de altura, dividiendo físicamente en dos a la ciudad, zanjas, perros adiestrados, armas que se disparaban automáticamente, alambre de púas, torres de vigilancia y miembros de la policía fronteriza así como del ejército comunista complementaban el bloqueo que no permitia el paso de la población de la parte oriente a la occidente de la ciudad. El gobierno comunista afirmo que la razón era el impedir infiltraciones de espías y saboteadores en su territorio, en realidad trataba de impedir que las personas técnicamente capacitadas desertaran del este para buscar en la Alemania del Oeste libertad de expresión y la oportunidad de un mejor nivel de vida (entre 1950 y 1960 aproximadamente 2 millones de personas abandonaron Alemania del este ).
Conforme trancurrieron los días y los años el muro se fue extendiendo y fortificando en todo el país hasta tener una longitud de 165 kilómetros, a los alemanes del lado oriente no se les permitía acercarse a más de 3 kilómetros de distancia.
Nació así la República Democrática Alemana ocupada por los aliados occidentales, mientras que la Unión Soviética ocupaba la denominada República Federal Alemana. De ésta manera una ciudad y un país fueron divididos política, socialmente e ideológicamente. Pero no sólo eso, muchas familias fueron separadas, muchas personas quedaron sin empleo y debieron adoptar una forma diferente de vivir, dicho literalmente de la noche a la mañana.
Tuvieron que pasar casi 3 décadas para que finalmente el 9 de Noviembre de 1989 y debido sobre todo a la presión ejercida en todo el mundo sobre el regimén comunista ruso es derribado el muro, marcando con ésto el final de la guerra fría entre Estados Unidos y la Unión Soviética. Durante poco más de 28 años muchas personas intentaron huír de Alemania Oriental hacia la occidental por no estar de acuerdo con el régimen que se les imponía, muchos lo lograron, otros fueron apresados y muchos murieron en el intento.
Ésto es lo que fue el muro de Berlín, el muro de la verguenza, que separó sin tomar en cuanta ni opinión, ni sentimientos de sus habitantes a un país, una ciudad, familias, amigos, vecinos, que aunque estaban a unos pasos daba la impresión de encontrarse a kilómetros de distancia.
